A LED (Light Emitting Diode) is usually a small area light source, often with extra optics added to the chip that shapes its radiation pattern. LED's are often used as small indicator lights on electronic devices and increasingly in higher power applications such as flashlights and area lighting. The color of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semiconducting material used, and can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet. LED's can also be used as a regular household light source. Besides lighting, interesting applications include sterilization of water and disinfection of devices.
LED Lamp
A LED Lamp is a type of solid state lighting that utilizes light-emitting-diodes LED's) as a source of illumination rather than electrical filaments or gas. LED lamps (also called LED bars or Illuminators) are usually clusters of LED's in a suitable housing. They come in different shapes, including the standard light bulb shape with a large E27 Edison srew and shape with a bi-pin base. Other models might have a small Edison E14 fitting, MR16 shape (Bipin cap) or GU10 bayonet socket). This includes low voltage (typically 12 V halogen-like) varieties and replacements for regular AC mains (120-240 V AC) lighting.
